The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development of Zambia, in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that establishes a partnership focused on enhancing quality control and assurance of data being generated from Zambia’s nationwide high-resolution geophysical aerial survey.
The Geological Survey of Finland seeks to provide support in ensuring comprehensive quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of data derived from the countrywide high-resolution geophysical aerial survey previously contracted by the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development. This would ensure that the data generated is accurate, reliable, and meets global standards for mineral exploration and resource management.
This partnership underscores Zambia’s commitment to leveraging support from cooperating partners with cutting-edge technologies and international expertise to advance its mining and mineral exploration activities.
In his remarks, Dr. Kabeta, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development stated that “The MoU marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to modernise Zambia’s mining sector. With the support we will receive from the Geological Survey of Finland, we want to ensure that the data being collected from our aerial survey is of the highest quality, thereby providing a reliable foundation for future extensive exploration and development. This partnership will not only enhance transparency and accountability in the management of our country’s mineral resources, but also boost investor confidence.”
In appreciating the signing of the MoU, Ms Saana Halinen, Ambassador of Finland to Zambia stated that “Finland has a lot of expertise in geological mapping and mineral exploration. GTK supplies high-quality services and research in these areas, which are crucial for reaching the goals of the Zambian government in increasing production in the mining sector.’’
The MoU signing is a result of the efforts of the Embassy of Finland’s annual flagship event, Finland Business Week, which aims to promote trade and cooperation between businesses and entities in Finland and Zambia. The MoU also complements the increasing Finnish business offerings in the mining sector in Zambia, which focuses on efficient and environmentally friendly solutions in geological mapping, wastewater filtration, mineral processing and metal refining.
The cooperation forms a vital part of Zambia’s broader strategy to promote sustainable mineral development, enhance geological knowledge, and attract international investment into the mining sector. Through this partnership, Zambia and Finland seek to continue exploring further opportunities for cooperation in geoscientific research and innovation.
In his remarks, Mr. Kimmo Tiilikainen, Director General of GTK stated “The cooperation promotes the availability of critical raw materials, development of mineral potential, responsible mining and beneficiation of tailings. The signing of this MoU is a great way to start the cooperation”.
The countrywide high resolution aerial geophysical survey that commenced in July 2024 is a cornerstone of Zambia’s efforts to enhance the understanding of its mineral wealth and improve the management of mineral resources. Through this partnership with the GTK, Zambia seeks to leverage Finland’s extensive experience and technological expertise in geoscience and mineral exploration, to ensure that the results of the survey are both precise and credible.
