Develops and implements strategies that promote occupational safety, health and environmental protection within the ASM subsector, ensuring safe working conditions for all miners.
Promotes the development and implementation of programmes that enhance mineral value addition and maximize economic benefits for artisanal and small-scale miners and their communities.
Responsible for developing policies that provide a comprehensive framework for ASM operations, ensuring the sector operates within clear, supportive, and enforceable guidelines.
Promotes and supports the adoption of sustainable mining practices within the ASM sector to minimize environmental degradation and ensure long-term viability of mining operations.
Forges strategic partnerships and collaborations with local and international organizations, civil society, and the private sector to strengthen ASM development and support programmes.
Manages the ASM Fund to ensure adequate financial resources are mobilized and disbursed for supporting artisanal and small-scale mining activities, training, and development programmes.
Maintains a comprehensive and up-to-date database of ASM operations, operators, cooperatives, and mineral production for effective monitoring, planning, and decision-making.
Through sponsorship programmes, the Directorate provides critical support to ASM operators in three key areas.
Provides technical capacity building to artisanal and small-scale miners, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed for safe, efficient, and sustainable mining practices.
Provides channels and linkages for mineral sales, connecting artisanal miners with formal markets and buyers to ensure fair prices and sustainable revenue streams.
Conducts awareness programmes on occupational safety, health, environmental protection, and best practices to foster a culture of responsibility within the ASM sector.
