Yesterday, we marked a pivotal moment in Zambia’s history when we officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new 300 MW thermal power plant by Maamba Energy. This initiative is a significant step towards addressing our nation’s energy deficit.
The project symbolizes our relentless efforts to achieve energy security in a country where reliance on a single energy source has made us vulnerable— as evidenced by a recent drought that diminished about 80% of our hydropower capacity.
This project exemplifies the spirit of shared responsibility between the government and stakeholders in securing our energy future and reflects our collective determination to overcome the challenges that have held us back for far too long.
We urge the people of Maamba and all Zambians to embrace and support this project.
We remain committed to pursuing diverse electricity generation technologies that are resilient to climate change, such as solar, wind, geothermal, and others.
The coal generation at Maamba Energy is being carried out in compliance with the highest environmental standards, and we look forward to the timely completion of this project.
Hakainde Hichilema,
President of the Republic of Zambia.
