GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY AND OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE SUPER PIT AT BARRICK LUMWANA MINES

We were deeply honored and delighted to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony of the Lumwana Mine Super Pit, a momentous event that marks a significant milestone and ushers in a new era for the entire country.
The expansion of this project clearly demonstrates our ongoing progress towards building a robust, globally competitive mining industry, particularly in copper, which is quickly becoming a critical mineral on the world stage.
This development comes with a substantial investment of approximately $500 million USD, which will be allocated towards infrastructure development, operational expansion, and the acquisition of advanced mining technologies. It is expected to create over 3,000 direct jobs during the construction phase, with an additional 1,500 long-term jobs upon completion.
We extend our gratitude to Barrick Lumwana for their commitment and collaboration in ensuring that this project achieves its intended impact.
Hakainde Hichilema,
President of the Republic of Zambia.
